It goes without saying, but this was a fun shoot.  Set build at Milk Studios in LA, and working with NBA superstar Kevin Durant.  Big thank you to KD, Roc Nation, Sparkling ICE, Javelin, and Production on 5th.  Total team effort.  Last year I also shot a print campaign for Sparkling ICE with Robinson Cano.  This was the follow up shoot, plus I directed a few web interviews with KD which you can see above as well.

BECU Member Portrait Ad Campaign

Posted by / Filed under Blog

While I didn’t use my iPhone to make any of these member portraits or videos for BECU, it was my iPhone Portrait project that helped shape the direction of this ad campaign by DNA.  It is incredibly gratifying to work on a project like this, when there is a close tie to something as personal as my iPhone Portraits.  Exploring the human face through photography and video is the one thing I have never grown tired of.  Every new person I photograph presents a new opportunity (or sometimes a challenge), and I am always learning from the experience of photographing people.  Below are some of the portraits I made from the nearly 50 people I photographed for this project. Everyone is an actual BECU member. Working with “real” people is a lot of fun for me because they don’t come in with any expectations as to what they think I want them to do. And there are always some surprises, which I think makes the portraits all the more interesting.

If you were watching the summer Olympics this year, you may have seen these commercials, which I directed.  The billboards, bus wraps, posters, etc. are all over Seattle, as well.  Big thanks to BECU and DNA, especially Lianne Onart, Dave Echenoz, Molly Woodruff, and Dan Gross.

I always try to keep people on their toes and make things as fun as possible. To me, that means taking awkward pictures of the ACD Lianne and BECU member, Kiki.

Big thanks to my wonderful crew. Projects like this are a total team effort. Not to mention it wouldn’t be nearly as fun without all of these great people.

Con Man

Posted by / Filed under Personal Work

Con Man. The many faces of Howard Cogitz.

Identity is an interesting thing.  We dress and decorate ourselves to convey a message to others, communicating to them with intentionality or not  “this is what I want you to think about who I am.”  What is interesting about this, though, is that most people don’t interpret our message the way we intend.  Our identity and the opinions of others are inextricably linked together, for better or worse. Our identity forms opinions.  Others opinions mold and form our identity.
Identity is something I have been thinking about a lot over the last several years as I try to understand more about myself, and how I view others.  In 2015, I created a portrait series called Members Only, where I styled 13 people to look exactly the same.  Once I finished that series, I wanted to explore multiple identities in a single person, and wondered what was the extent of the range of a single human face.   In a portrait, visually, how much can one person change?  With that, I give you Con Man.

Howard Cogitz is one of the most prolific American con men of the 20th century.  His first known con was in 1958 while running a fake real estate development company in Florida.  At best count, he walked away with over 3 million dollars from nearly 16 individuals and families.

In 1963 he spread out, with known ties to Las Vegas, New York, and San Francisco.  It seems he may have primarily lived in Florida under many different aliases, which indicates he may have originally been from there.  His main game was to create fake corporations in the real estate business and offer investment opportunities to people beginning to think about retirement.  His work can be traced from 1958 to 1971 when all signs of him vanished.  He was never caught or arrested, although there is record of him receiving a traffic ticket for speeding in Los Angeles during 1964 under the name Charles Barber.

Below are some behind the scenes pictures for those of you who like to see how things are made.  A very big thank you to Jennifer Popochock, Alexis Steinman, Brian Kirk, Viktor Fejes, Duffy De Armas, my wife Nichelle, and Peter Hanson.  Behind the scenes pictures by Peter Hanson.  I feel like this is just the start of something pretty exciting.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are back on tour, folks.  The new album, “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made” comes out in February 2016, and they are currently doing “An Evening with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis” tour in the US.  Some of my favorite projects over the past couple of years have been with Ben and Ryan, and this image was no exception.  This might be my favorite conceptual landscape image to date.  Hope you enjoy the sneak peek at how it all came together.  I’m already looking forward to whatever comes next.

As a youngster growing up in California, I always wanted to be a Hollywood dog trainer.  Well, that didn’t work out so well.  But I do still love dogs, and I love working with them, despite what WC Fields said, “Never work with children or animals.”  Being the rebel I am, I decided to work with both children and animals on this new ad campaign for Seattle Humane with The Hilt agency.  And why stop there!  Let’s also add a super wild drag queen, and a family with three teenage girls while we are at it.  You know, just to make things more interesting!

Seattle Humane is a wonderful organization and I sincerely hope these images make them a lot of money so they can save even more animal lives. And some human lives too…

Spontaneous getaway anyone?  Yes please!  My team and I got to work closely with the folks at Instagram and Hotel Tonight on this amazing ad campaign called “Tonight I Am“.  Hotel Tonight is a hotel booking app that let’s you book a great hotel from a curated list of hotels in just 3 clicks.  No matter where you are, or what you are doing, you can book a great hotel without spending hours researching and comparing prices.  To show this, we came up with 6 scenarios from daily life, and styled the subject in each scene as if they are already in the place they want to be.  Travel is just 3 clicks away, and mentally they are already there.  The campaign has done really well so far, and has received a lot of great press, including this article by AdWeek.

Big thank you’s to Hotel Tonight and Instagram.  Let’s do it again soon.
The six set’s we shot on were designed and built by Adi Goodrich and her team (we both have the same great rep – Redeye!).  High five!  Retouching by Ryan Cleary.

I’m not sure if it get’s much better than this.  You know that old joke about the photographer in the doughnut shop…  well, it’s true.  The joke goes, you can’t have too many doughnuts, when a photographer…er, uh, tries to eat…with cameras.  Anyway.  I have no will power, and I really like doughnuts.  You get the point.  And if you know me, you know I am addicted to Top Pot old fashioned doughnuts.  Keep your camera close, and your old fashioned doughnuts closer.

Aside from eating my favorite Top Pot doughnuts all day on set, this was a very exciting campaign for us because we got to develop and produce the creative.  Top Pot came to us wanting to create something memorable for their marketing and advertising efforts.  This is something I have been moving into more and more in recent months, but this was the project that really set things off.  Top Pot is an institution in Seattle, and their slogan is “Hand Forged Doughnuts and Coffee” and the logo is a blacksmith hammering away on an anvil.  We thought it would be fun to bring that idea to life with three images depicting bakers hand forging doughnuts and coffee on an anvil.  To keep things authentic, while having a bit of fun, we shot it all in the actual bakery where Top Pot makes all of their delicious doughnuts in Downtown Seattle.

Thank you so much Top Pot.  You were wonderful hosts and clients!

Food Lifeline Campaign

Posted by / Filed under Ad Campaign

Food Lifeline is a great organization that is fighting to end hunger in Western Washington.  “Working with the food industry and its surpluses, we come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger, including redirecting good food from manufacturers, farmers, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste.” – Food Lifeline website

There are some pretty staggering numbers on food waste in America, so it was especially gratifying to work on a project like this that I know is going to have a positive impact.  For example, did you know nearly 40% or 170 billion pounds of the available food supply at the retail and consumer levels in America will go to waste?  – via Food Lifeline website

I worked on this ad campaign with the folks at Green Rubino, who I also shot The Recommendeuer with last year.  Big shout out to my friends Joe Quatrone and Dennis Budell who I love collaborating with!

Here is a fun little post production fact I thought you might enjoy.  I photographed each of the subjects bare arms and legs, and those assets were used to make the arms and legs on the apple and carrot.  Gigantic Squid did a fantastic job retouching these, and you can’t help but feel happy that the apple and carrot found good homes.

The Family That Goes To Jail Together…

Posted by / Filed under Keatley Christmas, Personal Work

Well, you know what they say.  The family that get’s into an altercation with a 65 year old lady with big hair from Texas because she cut in line in front of us at the Nordstrom Santa photo booth together, stays together.  And apparently goes to jail together too.  I’ll admit this is all a bit embarrassing, but as you can see, we were a little tied up so to speak this last Christmas.  Not exactly how we envisioned spending the Holidays, but thankfully everything got cleared up and we are now back home.  I wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to do our annual family picture this year, but thankfully one of the guards took this for us, and it turned out pretty good.  It is a part of our story now, so why pretend it didn’t happen I guess.

Oh, and is it too late to say Happy New Year?  Happy New Year everyone.  I hope you enjoy the new Keatley Family Picture.  And some of you thought we weren’t going to do one this year.  Please!

And one more thing.  If anyone want’s to help me pick up trash on the side of I-90 between Issaquah and Bend for the next 6 months, give a holler.  I would love your help.

The Matador From Florida

My rep asked me to come up with an image for a valentines day promo this year and the assignment was to interpret the color red.  I had the option of using an image from my archive, or I could shoot something new.  I love excuses to create new work, so of course I jumped at the opportunity.  Assignments like this are great because I enjoy having some sense of structure, or a goal, but it also allows your imagination to run wild by leaving things open.  Taylor and I had some fun brainstorming sessions over this, and our ideas were all over the place.  As usually happens with my personal work, we landed on one idea, and then the more we talked about it, the idea began to shift and change until we got here.  Going into the shoot, the idea was to shoot a different angle, but when working with bulls or other crazy animals, there is an element of taking what they give you.  I really didn’t want them to give me the horns so to speak…  Plus I realized while shooting that I liked this angle better anyway.  As much as we plan everything out, it’s always good to try to stay open to changes and improvements that come up along the way.

This shoot came a few weeks after working with Kodiak bears, and surprisingly enough, I was more scared of the bulls.  Almost terrified even.  It didn’t help matters that the rancher we were working with told me horror stories of people being disfigured and killed by bulls for about 15 minutes before he said, “Well, why don’t we hop in.” Sounds good.  Let’s jump a fence into a field of bulls.  Why am I doing this again?

So there you have it.  This was a really fun project from beginning to end.  Big thanks to Ryan Cleary on the beautiful retouching work as well.  Thanks for reading.  I hope you enjoy the image.
