Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are back on tour, folks.  The new album, “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made” comes out in February 2016, and they are currently doing “An Evening with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis” tour in the US.  Some of my favorite projects over the past couple of years have been with Ben and Ryan, and this image was no exception.  This might be my favorite conceptual landscape image to date.  Hope you enjoy the sneak peek at how it all came together.  I’m already looking forward to whatever comes next.

That's a wrap! Celebratory picture with the Seattle Humane crew.

As a youngster growing up in California, I always wanted to be a Hollywood dog trainer.  Well, that didn’t work out so well.  But I do still love dogs, and I love working with them, despite what WC Fields said, “Never work with children or animals.”  Being the rebel I am, I decided to work with both children and animals on this new ad campaign for Seattle Humane with The Hilt agency.  And why stop there!  Let’s also add a super wild drag queen, and a family with three teenage girls while we are at it.  You know, just to make things more interesting!

Seattle Humane is a wonderful organization and I sincerely hope these images make them a lot of money so they can save even more animal lives. And some human lives too…

Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman

Posted by / Filed under Editorial Work, CELEBRITY

It seems like forever ago now, but I actually played football in college until a shoulder injury sidelined my aspirations of reaching the NFL.  I mostly played free safety, but I also moved to defensive end in my last season.  Needless to say, photographing athletes is something I really enjoy, as it get’s me back out on the field to some extent.

Here is a quick snapshot I found from back in my college days. But back to Derrick Coleman, because that’s really what this is all about.  Most of you have probably already seen the incredible Duracell commercial about his fight to get to the NFL, but if you haven’t or if you want to watch it again, here it is.  It makes me emotional every time I see it.  So good.

Thanks for a fun shoot Derrick and Go Hawks!

Possibly the biggest “studio” I have ever shot in.

Spontaneous getaway anyone?  Yes please!  My team and I got to work closely with the folks at Instagram and Hotel Tonight on this amazing ad campaign called “Tonight I Am“.  Hotel Tonight is a hotel booking app that let’s you book a great hotel from a curated list of hotels in just 3 clicks.  No matter where you are, or what you are doing, you can book a great hotel without spending hours researching and comparing prices.  To show this, we came up with 6 scenarios from daily life, and styled the subject in each scene as if they are already in the place they want to be.  Travel is just 3 clicks away, and mentally they are already there.  The campaign has done really well so far, and has received a lot of great press, including this article by AdWeek.

Big thank you’s to Hotel Tonight and Instagram.  Let’s do it again soon.
The six set’s we shot on were designed and built by Adi Goodrich and her team (we both have the same great rep – Redeye!).  High five!  Retouching by Ryan Cleary.

Hand Forged Doughnuts and Coffee

I’m not sure if it get’s much better than this.  You know that old joke about the photographer in the doughnut shop…  well, it’s true.  The joke goes, you can’t have too many doughnuts, when a photographer…er, uh, tries to eat…with cameras.  Anyway.  I have no will power, and I really like doughnuts.  You get the point.  And if you know me, you know I am addicted to Top Pot old fashioned doughnuts.  Keep your camera close, and your old fashioned doughnuts closer.

Aside from eating my favorite Top Pot doughnuts all day on set, this was a very exciting campaign for us because we got to develop and produce the creative.  Top Pot came to us wanting to create something memorable for their marketing and advertising efforts.  This is something I have been moving into more and more in recent months, but this was the project that really set things off.  Top Pot is an institution in Seattle, and their slogan is “Hand Forged Doughnuts and Coffee” and the logo is a blacksmith hammering away on an anvil.  We thought it would be fun to bring that idea to life with three images depicting bakers hand forging doughnuts and coffee on an anvil.  To keep things authentic, while having a bit of fun, we shot it all in the actual bakery where Top Pot makes all of their delicious doughnuts in Downtown Seattle.

Thank you so much Top Pot.  You were wonderful hosts and clients!

I’ve been shooting a lot of personal work lately in between assignments and ad campaigns.  It’s been making life feel pretty busy, but there is nothing more exciting in my job than seeing a personal concept go from an idea to a finished image(s).  There are a lot of ideas I want to make happen this year, so I hope this is just the beginning.  As a side note, I have become really interested in mid-century modern design and the modern era, and that has had a big influence on my personal work.  I love how these images turned out.  Thanks for taking a look!

“What you know ‘bout rockin’ the wolf on your noggin
What you knowin’ about wearing a fur fox skin” – Macklemore

What a fun shoot!  I had the chance to work with Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) and Ryan Lewis 2 days before their new album “The Heist” came out and they headed out on tour.  It was an incredible day, and some amazing images resulted.  This being my favorite image.  I think…  Ahh, I don’t know, there are so many I like.  Yeah, this is my favorite.  Big congrats to the guys on Thrift Shop going platinum, as well as the incredible success they are having in general.  You guys are making Seattle proud for sure.  If you haven’t already heard The Heist, you should definitly check it out.  One of the best albums to come along in a while, and obviously the music story of the year.  I’m a fan.

I’ll post more images from this shoot when I can in the near future hopefully.  For now, I’ll leave you with this.  Represent!

Business Adventures with Bill Gates

Portrait of Bill Gates with Business Adventures. By photographer John Keatley.

It has been a while since I have blogged by the look of things.  No, I am not getting lazy, or losing my edge.  It is just that I am coming off of a 2 month long video project working 18 hour days, 7 days a week.  Holy smokes!  Somehow I was also able to sneak in a few quick photo assignments where time permitted.  One of my most recent shoots was for the Wall Street Journal who called me to photograph Bill Gates with his favorite business book, “Business Adventures” by John Brooks.  Needless to say, thanks to Bill, this relatively unknown book is now a New York Times Bestseller.  It’s a really interesting read, and you can read the Wall Street Journal article here as well as watch a video about Business Adventures and John Brooks.

The copy of “Business Adventures” Bill is holding in this picture is the actual book Warren Buffet sent him 23 years ago.  You can see from the wear on the dust jacket, it has seen some use over the years.  Pretty fun assignment.  Thanks Ronnie!

Selected for American Photography 30

Posted by / Filed under Awards

There are a lot of contests and awards these days, but the the one I get most excited about and the one that means the most to me is American Photography.  I let out a little scream today, when I got an email telling me my portrait of Macklemore has been selected into American Photography 30.

Here is a little more from AP about this years book:

“From 9,644 pictures entered by 873 photographers, magazines, agencies, publishers and schools, the jury selected, by a majority vote or better, only 357 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2013.

American Photography 30 will be printed in full color and distributed worldwide in hardcover immediately after The Party and BIG TALK, November 5-6, 2014 – our two annual launch events in New York City that celebrate the winners. All Selected photographers and entrants will be invited to attend both events with our compliments.”
